At one time or another, everyone has a plumbing problem, and when that time comes, knowing someone you can trust and who will get the job done quickly and economically is a must.
To learn about his business success and talk about careers in the plumbing trades, I recently met with Nate Hyde, owner of Plattsburgh Plumbing. Hyde grew up in his family’s plumbing business, working with and learning from his grandfather. That continued until he was 26 and ready to go out on his own.
When I asked why he decided to start his business, he explained, “Actually, plumbing chose me. Working alongside my grandfather and uncle gave me a lot of experience and being with family, the knowledge came quicker and it gave me a level of comfort that I could, not only do the plumbing work, but run a business.”
Plattsburgh Plumbing, LLC opened its doors in May 2012 as a one-stop, full-service plumbing company staffed by high quality plumbers who do everything from sewer pipe replacement to fixing a simple faucet leak — all at affordable prices.
One of the trickiest things Hyde found when he started out was deciding on the right combination of work — residential or commercial. While commercial work is now his bread and butter — he has worked with several of the area’s big box retailers — he enjoys the satisfaction that comes with helping homeowners. “It took a while, but I found a happy medium where I do larger projects and still take care of small businesses and residential property owners,” Hyde offered. Beyond basic plumbing services, Plattsburgh Plumbing also installs and services heating and sprinkler systems.
A Growing Trade
I asked Hyde for his thoughts on the plumbing trade and what it takes to become a professional. “I really enjoyed working with my family and found it fulfilling to help people in need. That’s when I realized it was the career I was meant to have,” he explained. “It also helps keep me physically active. Hauling tools in all kinds of situations is like getting a complete workout at the gym.”
He continued, “But this work isn’t for everyone. You need to have a strong work ethic and take the initiative in order to be successful. Plumbing isn’t just a job; it is a mindset. And you have to be available 24/7 and willing to work early morning and late night hours.”
Daily Routine
Hyde’s workdays are always busy. There are emergencies to tend to, especially on Monday mornings, but he has learned to roll with the punches and shuffle calls around when they happen. “It is important to keep our regular clients happy by not putting them off too long when an emergency occurs,” he said. “I’ve never had a boring day at work. I’ve pulled hundreds of children’s toys from clogged toilets and even a pair of ‘bloomers’ belonging to one embarrassed client, as well as keys, and even an engagement ring from a sink drain.”
Like many businesses, Plattsburgh Plumbing took a hit when COVID occurred. Business slowed and Hyde needed to lay off some of his workers. “When things improved, we took a look at what we needed to keep clients happy, and my two remaining employees and I decided we would work longer and harder. I’m happy to say it has worked because the people I have are great.” As he looks to the future, Hyde indicated there could be the potential to add additional workers.
Community
Hyde finds great satisfaction in helping his community — he offers veteran and senior discounts and has a soft spot in his heart for senior clients. For them he is happy to go above and beyond.
Next Generation
When asked what the future holds for Plattsburgh Plumbing, Hyde said he would be happy to see either or both his children take over the family business when he is ready to retire. “I would love to share my knowledge and experience with them, but they are young and it’s wait and see for now.”
Best Advice
Our conversation concluded with Hyde’s advice. For the youth of today he offered, “There are options out there for everyone when it comes to finding a rewarding career. Take your time and research them.” And for consumers, he emphasized, “Never hesitate to get a second opinion on a plumbing problem. It is not only smart, but can be an economically wise decision. There can be many different ways to fix a problem and some will be more cost effective than others.”
It has been nearly a decade since Nate Hyde stepped out on his own. He has worked hard, achieved the success he sought and is proud to be a role model for young people interested in a career in the trades.
