This region is blessed with young “spark plugs” who bravely carry the torch of “save-the-world” issues and distill them down to bite-size pieces for the rest of us to consume. Michelle brings a passion, commitment and enthusiasm for developing an environmentally sustainable culture. Her dedication to this cause is only one facet of her community-centric persona.
How do you contribute to the culture of your company? I provide creative solutions to multi layered problems. I am a meticulous worker who can be depended on.
What are you doing to make a difference in your community? I am a proud, third generation volunteer. I am active in my local Rotary Club (I chair our Environmental Sustainability Committee) and I ask A LOT of questions. I challenge habits that do not create a beneficial symbiotic relationship between humans and our planet. Before I was a Rotarian, I was a charter member of a volunteer task force (the Conscious Citizens of Plattsburgh) with the goal of mitigating single use plastic in our community.
What is the single most important characteristic for success? Persistence.
What is your biggest professional success? Navigating the vast and complicated field of law with no formal schooling in this field previously.
What important lesson have you learned in your career? To not take minor disagreements personally. To strive to be compassionate and empathetic. To absorb wisdom from those around me and utilize my resources.
What is your dream job? To be an astronaut. Space fascinates me!
What is the biggest risk you have ever taken? Either moving to the Basque country to teach English or hiking an active volcano in Indonesia (It erupted shortly thereafter.)
What is something that no one would guess about you? I am a naturally gifted artist.
Write a note to your younger self… Slow down, be patient, drink water, listen more, and start investing in your ROTH IRA ASAP!
What can the North Country do to make this area more appealing to a younger generation? I believe that the North Country should… • Continue to invest in companies that support renewable energy in their practices and business models while supporting a diverse workforce. • Implement policies that will not only help the current residents, but also future generations (with a focus on fringe benefits). • Treat the land we stand on as a respected citizen. Introduce bills/rules/regulations that protect the earth’s rights. • Create community centers for recycling where one can sort on the spot and allows a free exchange of materials that one no longer uses. • Add more green spaces in the city/town of Plattsburgh, which encourages the relationship between a person and their habitat.
